Poem: The Choice

He thought so little of me I became small,
So small I hardly knew me at all.

His expectations of me were low as the grave,
So I tried to fulfill in my usual way.

I was as clean and quiet as I could be
with a bottle of pills and a whiskey neat.

But the pills fell away when I heard a voice,
Whisper inside that "life is a choice".

 "Love empowers and never destroys,
but love will die without any voice."

So I spoke up, and I stood my ground,
and that is why I am here with you now.
